How to import fresh vegetables and fruits from Bangladesh

What Bangladesh grows for export, when it is in season, how it is packed and documented, and how to place your first order — written by an exporter shipping from Chattogram since 2005.

Why source vegetables from Bangladesh?

Bangladesh is one of the world’s largest vegetable producers, with fertile river plains that grow crops all year. Its exports are best known for the vegetables South Asian shoppers cook with every day — spiny gourd, pointed gourd, taro, gourds, beans and leafy greens — which are hard to find fresh from anywhere else. Short flights from Chattogram and Dhaka put this produce in Gulf markets within a day or two of harvest.

What you can import

S.R. Enterprise exports 58 products across six groups: fruit, vegetables, leafy greens, roots and tubers, spices and herbs, and fish. A few of the most requested:

  • Spiny gourd (কাকরোল, Kakrol) — season May–Oct
  • Pointed gourd (পটল, Potol) — season Mar–Sep
  • Taro stolon (কচুর লতি, Kochur loti) — season Apr–Oct
  • Bottle gourd (লাউ, Lau / Lauki) — season Oct–Mar
  • Green chilli (কাঁচা মরিচ, Kacha morich) — season All year
  • Mango (আম, Aam) — season May–Aug
  • Lychee (লিচু, Lichu) — season May–Jun
  • Cabbage (বাঁধাকপি, Badhakopi) — season Nov–Feb

The import process, step by step

  1. Send your requirement. Products, weekly quantity, destination airport and your clearing agent.
  2. Agree the quotation. Price, grade, carton size and shipping days — usually confirmed the same working day.
  3. Harvest and packing. Produce is harvested to the flight, hand-graded and packed in ventilated, labelled export cartons.
  4. Inspection and documents. Plant-quarantine inspection and phytosanitary certificate, certificate of origin, invoice, packing list and air waybill.
  5. Air freight and collection. Our own freight forwarder hands the cargo to the airline; your agent collects it at destination.

Export documents

  • Phytosanitary certificate
  • Certificate of origin
  • Commercial invoice & packing list
  • Air waybill

On your side you need the import licence or food registration your country requires — for example with MOCCAE in the UAE or the SFDA in Saudi Arabia — and a clearing agent at the airport.

Choosing a reliable Bangladeshi exporter

  • Membership of the Bangladesh Fresh Fruits, Vegetables & Allied Products Exporters Association (BFVAPEA) and the local chamber of commerce.
  • Consistent grading and labelling, and photos of your cartons before they fly.
  • Control of freight forwarding, so space is booked and documents are ready on time.
  • A track record — S.R. Enterprise has exported since 2005 and its founder was named a Commercially Important Person (Export) by the Government of Bangladesh.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import fresh vegetables from Bangladesh?

Yes. Bangladesh exports fresh vegetables and fruits by air every day, mainly to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Malaysia, Singapore and the UK. You need an exporter in Bangladesh (such as S.R. Enterprise), an import licence or food registration in your own country, and a clearing agent at your airport.

Which vegetables does Bangladesh export?

The main export vegetables are spiny gourd (kakrol), pointed gourd (potol), bitter gourd, bottle gourd, ash gourd, sweet pumpkin, okra, brinjal, yard-long beans, country beans, green chilli, taro stolon and stem, leafy greens such as red amaranth, jute leaves and Malabar spinach, plus potatoes, cabbage and cauliflower. Mangoes, lychees, jackfruit, pineapple and Sylhet citrus are the main fruits.

How long does it take to ship vegetables from Bangladesh to the Gulf?

Produce is harvested the day before the flight and packed the same day. Direct flights from Chattogram or Dhaka reach Gulf airports in roughly five to seven hours, so cargo is usually ready for collection within 24–48 hours of harvest.

What documents do I receive with a shipment from Bangladesh?

Each shipment travels with a phytosanitary certificate, certificate of origin, commercial invoice & packing list, air waybill. The phytosanitary certificate is issued by the Plant Quarantine Wing of Bangladesh’s Department of Agricultural Extension after inspection.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

Quantities are quoted per order. Many importers start with a mixed trial shipment to check quality and packing, then move to weekly volumes.

How are prices quoted?

Prices depend on the product, season, grade, packing and current air-freight rates, so we quote per shipment — usually the same working day. Ask on WhatsApp for this week’s list and prices.

Do you ship by sea as well as by air?

Fresh, perishable vegetables travel by air. Hardier products such as potatoes, onions, dry fish and some spices can be discussed for sea freight in containers — ask us for your destination.

Can you export to countries outside the Gulf?

Yes, on request. Tell us your destination and product list; we check flight options and the import rules for your country before quoting.
